The crumbling uneven patio needed to be replaced while keeping the surrounding boulder wall and fireplace. A pathway from the modern back porch to the patio that kept feet dry but not overly hardscaped was desired. A lawn was added in later in the process for the dog to have soft cool place to lay down and hang out. Shade was needed from afternoon sun on the patio and an umbrella stand would have crowded the intimate space.
